Wikipedia takes a stand

Post by Bradders » Wed Jan 18, 2012 9:05 pm

Imagine a World
Without Free Knowledge

For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia. Learn more.

Does the USA control the internet?

In a technical way, yes, sortof. The DNS root zone is controlled by the United States Department of Commerce who must approve all changes to the root zone file requested by ICANN.

What is the DNS Root Zone?

And i think SOPA and PIPA are a joke some corrupt senators getting money from hollywood lobbyist to in an attempt to pass regulations to benifit their industry.. A prime example of why our(USA) country is going down the tube. Apparently Obama said he would veto the legislation if it was passed but He also said he wouldnt sign NDAA and he did. If he does veto it would take a 2/3 vote from congress to Pass it with out his approval and that is highly unlikely. Today's Black outs have already cause a few supporters of the bill to back down. My only complaint about today was That facebook did not participate in the black outs they alone could have reached millions of people to show what could happen if the bill passed, And 2 reddit was closed and i actually was productive at work today wtf.

The internet will evolve, if they want to destroy DNS they can go right ahead. There will be other ways to connect, they'll have to install an international firewall, or start unplugging connections... good luck with that.

It would be nice to think that humanity owns the internet, but Dox is right, the US owns at the very least control of the DNS system. There was an internet before there was DNS, too. There will be internet after, just might be different.

We have just got a wake-up call from the Nintendo Generation.
