Texting someone to death..

Post by dox » Fri Jun 16, 2017 5:16 pm

I'm not so sure I know how I feel about this:
In a case that hinged largely on a teenage couple's intimate text messages, Michelle Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter Friday in the 2014 death of her boyfriend, who poisoned himself by inhaling carbon monoxide in his pickup truck, a Massachusetts judge ruled.

Her messages sure seem cruel though:

July 8, 2014

Carter: "So are you sure you don't wanna [kill yourself] tonight?"
Roy: "What do you mean am I sure?"
Carter: "Like, are you definitely not doing it tonight?"
Roy: "Idk yet I'll let you know"
Carter: "Because I'll stay up with you if you wanna do
it tonight"
Roy: " Another day wouldn't hurt"
Carter: "You can't keep pushing it off, tho, that's all you keep doing"
Bunch more here:

Dang...

I mean, she did pressure him to kill himself when she probably should have called someone to forcibly take him in to a mental hospital. A major part of me feels she did the wrong thing and is partly responsible for his death.

A small part of me feels (after reading the messages posted in the 2nd link) that she, in a way, was very supportive and helped him in a sort of "million dollar baby" euthanasia kind of way. Also she seemingly tried a variety of things to convince him not to do it.

Have to re-read this when I'm more rested (worked 2 weeks straight with no day off and little sleep, first day off tomorrow) and see if I have a more clear opinion about this then.

As someone who's dealt with very similar situations in my line of work (Clients threatening and even attempting suicide over the phone with me) this is just crazy. I'll admit my first time experiencing it, I had absolutely no idea what to do, but at least had the instinct to suggest they call Crisis. I believe this woman definitely has some issues of her own. Is she responsible? Sure, somewhat. But it was still his decision. It takes years of training to learn how to talk someone down. That was clearly not this girls intent. But 20 years in jail? That's a bit ridiculous.

She clearly shows concern over the first couple of days, and even urges him to get help. She's not licensed to 302 the guy (involuntary hospitalization for 72 hours) and did everything she could think of (asking him to get help.) He continued to refuse to get help. At this point, I would have called Crisis for the individual, and had the police show up to help. Most people don't even realize that's an option. Instead, she went with the "well he's set on doing this, and I'm tired of dealing with it, so let's just get it over with" mentality.

It's a lack of experience, not murder.
