Boxee Box or WDTV Live Hub For Crystal's New Hangout

Post by Crystal » Thu Jul 26, 2012 4:24 pm

Essexboy's post about shiny new things inspired me to do a similar thing.

I'm currently re'jigging my living space at home since I practucally live in my bedroom which is getting unhealthy. I've built an office scenario in my thrid bedroom which is where my pc / printer will go, and my main bedroom will house my flat screen and cinema. So.... with my pc in the back room I still wanna be able to watch my movie collection (on my HDD) but I don't want wires trailing about everywhere etc. I've got these two things in mind to fix the problem:

The Boxee Box
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0043EV3MS/r ... B0043EV3MS

or

The WDTV Live Hub
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00466IEXE/r ... B00466IEXE

As you can see, the glaring difference is that the WDTV has a 1TB HDD on it for storage. Since I want this to stream to my pc, I don't really care about that. But if they are an identical product, then an extra 30 GBP for a 1TB drive is fairly good value.

Does anyone have either of the afforementioned products that they could comment on? Is there anything else I should be looking at?

I've actually ordered the Boxee Box, but can always cancel it ;)

I am thrilled with the WDTV and have bought several, recommend it every time. Awesome strength, setup, customization, network integration, community, support, etc. I use it in home and corporate environments.

buy a bigger smart TV. It's the only real option.

Incorrect, two examples:
  1. the WDTV system actually has community-written firmware, meaning: you can mod your experience (more codecs, different UI, etc) -- good luck getting that kind of robustness elsewhere.
  2. you can move your WDTV to different displays. An integrated solution means you're stuck.

Cool Dox that's one vote for the WDTV then!

Holy you're talking about a product that is ten times the cost of what I had in mind. It'll be out of date in 18ms. Not doing that again!

buy a ps3/xbox, you'll have something that plays better games than what you can get on your pc and something that you can also stream to!
